A biking accident can be extremely terrifying. If you enjoy riding your bike for recreation or for daily commutes, you may find yourself the victim of a biking accident due to the negligence of another party. If this happens to you, you need to know how to best handle the situation. The steps you take after a biking accident can impact your personal injury case. Here are some things you need to do after a biking accident:

Call 911

If no one has yet done so, you need to call 911 and wait for the police and an ambulance. Even if you do not think you are really hurt, you need to get the accident on record with law enforcement and get yourself checked out medically. You may have internal injuries you are not aware of immediately following the accident.

Never leave the accident scene until you have talked to the police and the paramedics. If you do leave the scene and decide to file a lawsuit for your damages, you will have a difficult time proving your case without a police report. If the police do not investigate, proving negligence will be difficult.

Gather Information

If possible, you should get the name of the person who caused your biking accident. You also need to get the contact information from anyone who witnessed the accident. Ideally, the police will also talk to everyone and place their information in the police report, but it is a good idea to get the information yourself just in case.

Take Photos and Video

If you are able to do so, take some photos of the accident scene, as well as a quick video of the area. If you cannot do this yourself, ask someone else to do it and have them send you the footage. You need photos of your damaged bike, your injuries, damaged property you had on your person at the time, the other vehicle that hit you, and anything else pertinent to your case.

Do Not Make Repairs

If your bike or other property is damaged, hold off on getting anything repaired right away. Keep the bike, your helmet, and anything else pertaining to the case with you. An attorney such as the Law Office of Robert Karwin will recommend what to do with your equipment and clothes. Do not allow anyone to take these items unless your attorney advises you to do otherwise. Also keep the clothes you were wearing. Do not wash them. All of these items are important pieces of evidence that can help demonstrate what happened during the accident.
